Chapter Synopsis
A prisoner, a scholar skilled in ancient languages, is given a proposition: translate an ancient text found in a dungeon to earn his freedom. He accepts and is taken to a new town where he is introduced to a family of healers. He begins translating the text, which describes an ancient potion, and simultaneously is encouraged to learn alchemy by one of the family members, while contemplating his future and goals.
