Chapter Synopsis
Alicia, seeking to mend her family's reputation and solidify her relationship with Bayezid, publicly bestows honor upon Vlad, her family's protector, by giving him her handkerchief. This is done in a way that both displays gratitude and takes advantage of Vlad's position to further her goals. Vlad, unfamiliar with noble customs, struggles with the symbolic gesture and is coached by others about the significance of how it was presented, revealing there are two forms, honor and love. Later, Vlad encounters an old, familiar spirit, hinting at a deeper connection to the mystical. This causes some confusion and embarrassment with Vlad’s comrades.
